Tallulah Fun

Living so close to the Tallulah River, one would think I would be super stoked on when these releases approach. Truth be told, this is not on my top river list. The reason: complete head game.

Years ago, I broke my rib near my spine due to flipping in Tom’s Brain Buster. The first time I ever ran this river, I hit “the thing” head on and while I was fine, my back didn’t like the impact for a good month after. To round out the list of reasons why I battle a head game out here, this was the last time I ever saw my friend Jen alive and it was an awkward interaction at the put in between the two of us.

Fast forward, I’ve worked to get through the mental issues and enjoy this river. And I do enjoy this river. Regardless of what I have worked out, I still get nervous putting on, dealing with the shaky “Tallulah legs”, not feeling warmed up and rolling the dice of what Oceana will dish out and of course, every time I am about to enter Tom’s, I give myself a pep talk!

Here is a recap of an early morning lap where the river was ours and I truly had a blast out there.

I started kayaking in Wisconsin of all places, because this is where I am from. I then moved to San Diego and took on kayak surfing along with heading to the Kern River when water was available. I then made the move to Asheville, NC and have been hooked on this sport since my Wisconsin days. With whatever it is that you do, do it because you love it, not because society tells you should or for other outside factors. Don't simply exist, live!
